LANDOWNERS at the Kainantu gold mine in Eastern Highlands province have threatened to shut down the mine, citing non-compliance of the 2003 agreement as the reason. The Bilimoia Landowner Association (BLA) has given Highlands Kainantu and Highlands Pacific Ltd seven days to meet with them and discuss the matter or face an indefinite closure. BLA executive director Bernard Kelonti said mining tenement landowners felt they were being used and cheated on contracts, employment and training of landowners’ involvement. Mr Kelonti said the company has been operating in isolation and has not complied with most parts of the agreement.
