Always have a laugh when people comment on the high costs of Australian mining it is high cost primarily because it costs so much to live here particularly real estate. The wages have to be in tune with the costs of housing or else the whole deck of cards falls over . Which is why I dont think the Abbott government will shed too many tears when the real estate market takes a nasty hit around 2016 especially Perth could be messy. Some will suffer but it will create opportunities for others to buy in.
