GM mutates his best engineer to electric cars

In a gesture of great operational and symbolic significance, General Motors has just transferred the chief engineer of its Chevrolet Camaro sports car to the forefront of its electric vehicle program.

Al Oppenheiser will be responsible for developing the electric vehicles of the four GM, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC brands.

This is reported in the Car and Driver publication .

According to the US magazine, Oppenheiser is known to be one of GM's top engineers and project managers, inspiring great team loyalty and finding not only technical solutions to the problems, but also how to get them accepted and applied. the administrative structure of General Motors. He is credited with the paternity of the technical and commercial success of the fifth and sixth generations of Camaro.

A spokesman for GM confirmed to the US magazine that the manufacturer is reassigning "some of our best talents" to the development of current and future products.

At the heart of GM's electric shift

Oppenheiser, who had been chief engineer of the Camaro program since
    2007
, will be at the heart of the development of future electric vehicles. "Now he will be working in an area where we can not afford not to deliver the right vehicle to customers," GM spokesman Car and Drive said .

"I thought I would die in this role, but I'm happy to be part of the future," said Oppenheiser, in a quote from GM to Car and Driver.

The Detroit automaker has recently announced a major restructuring that will double its investments in the all-electric car and in the autonomous car. Oppenheiser will join his new role in January, along with other job changes at GM in the development of new products, the spokesman said.

He will work on several electric vehicles of various types (not just sports coupes) and his role does not mean that Chevrolet will necessarily launch an electric version of the Camaro, although this is not excluded in the future.

That being the case, under the direction of Oppenheiser, Chevrolet produced an all-electric Camaro dragger believed to be able to win National Hot Rod Association acceleration races, a demonstration of the electric car's racing capabilities.
