Yeah I was a little surprised even tho I knew China was pushing LFP batteries. It makes sense for less expensive short range versions. You can use up the same space for the battery pack but end up with a little less energy.
Tesla is one of the few car companies that anticipates rather than reacts to battery supply issues. Everyone else just says, "oops we couldn't get enough batteries." It is definitely good for them to have more than one option. There is no way Tesla is giving up on NCA or NCM batteries any time soon. There would have to be serious supply issues with nickel and cobalt, and say $7.50 - 8.00/lb nickel or even significantly higher wouldn't warrant abandoning lithium ion. The new LFP are pushing 200 wh/kg which is fine, but the next gen Tesla batteries may very well beat that by 50 percent or so.
