Hello fellow holders,
Been contemplating posting this for a while. Hope I make sense with this....
So, to start with, I am sure a lot of us will know that Elon Musk aims to reduce the Cobalt content in his Tesla batteries to nothing. Here's an article where he trumpets this personal quest of his:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...ing-its-model-3-means-less-cobalt-more-nickel
It shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that Tesla and Panasonic, their battery suppliers, have been gradually reducing the Cobalt content in the batteries since the first Tesla's hit the road. Here's another article showing this gradual reduction:
https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-battery-tech-cobalt-mining-industry/
You may be wondering, what am I doing posting all this? Surely this is not good for us, ARL, as we are looking to be producers of Cobalt. Well, let's consider the following articles in the context of the above:
https://www.livescience.com/62179-tesla-fire-cleanup-danger.html
https://techcrunch.com/2018/06/26/t...ed-twice-after-fatal-florida-crash-says-ntsb/
And a quick look in Wikipedia shows the number of incidents of Teslas catching fire escalating in recent years:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plug-in_electric_vehicle_fire_incidents#Tesla_Model_S_and_X
Now consider what Cobalt actually does in a lithium battery. Its primary role is to maintain stability in the battery, precisely to prevent overheating or "thermal runaway" in the batteries. According to this article, the scholarly interviewee stated this very clearly:
https://www.theverge.com/2018/6/21/17488626/elon-musk-cobalt-electric-vehicle-battery-science
My honest opinion is, Tesla's reduction of cobalt in their batteries is directly contributing to the likelihood of their batteries catching fire. I am also predicting that Elon Musks efforts to reduce cobalt content in lithium batteries will instead cause the spotlight to fall on the role of cobalt in lithium batteries, as the number of incidents of batteries catching fire escalate. This will, in turn, cause governments to mandate minimum cobalt content in lithium batteries, once it is known that making and selling lithium batteries that contain too little cobalt represents a huge safety hazard.
