BHP Billiton has approved $US43.2 million in funding to develop the first stage of proposed nickel sulphate facility in Kwinana, which will become the largest nickel sulphate facility in the world upon completion of stage 2.
This timely investment decision has been driven by the fast growing demand for Electric Vehicles, Residential Battery Systems and Large Scale Industrial Grid Batteries.
BHP Nickel West asset president Eduard Haegel has seen the potential for Nickel West to tap into battery-driven demand for nickel after Tesla founder Elon Musk said last year that lithium-ion batteries should actually be called nickel-graphite batteries, due to the large amount of nickel in battery cathodes.
"We believe there is going to be a very large increase in nickel sulphate demand over the mid-term, in order to support this 'new energy' revolution," Haegel said
