Peta Credlin supports burqa ban in Parliament House on security grounds
CAMPAIGNERS for outlawing the burqa in Parliament House are pleased to see their cause is gaining support, even from Tony Abbott’s Chief of Staff.
Peta Credlin is understood to have told Liberal MP George Christensen she is sympathetic to banning the garment in the building on security grounds, according to Fairfax Media.
BACKGROUND: Jacqui Lambie’s bid to ban the burqa
But the Prime Minister’s top aide is believed to have warned the backbencher not to inflame tensions present in the community during the debate.
The report said Ms Credlin told Mr Christensen she supports people’s right to wear the burqa in public, but — for consistency — supported the push for it to be banned like balaclavas and motorbike helmets.
