McGowan is a former naval officer who received an award for bravery during his service
Was thinking he stormed an enemy machine gun post under heavy fire or some such. In fact he was a legal pen pusher who saw no action attached to base HMAS Stirling. Turns out he rescued an unconscious driver from a burning car.
