OH yeah - if people could have a nuclear powerplant that they didn't have to pay for magically appear in an area nowhere near them, with no possibility of fallout/waste issues, then many would be onboard.

The nuclear thing that hurts is that no one wants to pay the taxes needed to get one (or a dozen that are needed) AND underwrite the risks.

So - Dutton, who apparently has suddenly become a nuclear scientist, is going to lecture us on nuclear power generation, in a country that resolutely oppposed it since the 50's. When it comes to Chernobyl like screwups, this sounds like the best contender!

The ad campaigns write themselves. Just replay ABC news footage of Fukishima, Chernobyl and a few close up shots of people protesting out the front of that US base in the NT...

The Boomers who were anti-nuclear in the 70's seem to be forgetting how scared they were then.

The voters may have some fear about letting the lowest-price highest-profit party run a nuclear powerplant. 2001, Greenpeace activists occupied the Lucas Heights facility to protest the construction of a second research reactor. Protestors gained access to the grounds, the HIFAR reactor, the high-level radioactive waste store and the radio tower. Their protest highlighted the security and environmental risks of the production of nuclear materials and the shipment of radioactive waste from the facility.
