The Voice was the greatest political own goal of my lifetime. During the gay marriage plebiscite the ALP position was that Australians should not be casting votes in judgment of each other. So in office they contrive an entirely unnecessary situation in which the rest of the country casts its vote on a small percentage thereof in a febrile atmosphere. They seemed to have forgotten that the gay marriage plebiscite was a construction of those opposed to the measure not its supporters. You put a policy to public vote where it's not required in order to delay or defeat it, not have it carried, something Albanese has probably now realised. Prior to the Voice fiasco
there was public sympathy for the government on cost of living because they inherited a difficult inflationary environment. That sympathy dissipated when The Voice referendum caused the public to question whether the government's priorities aligned with their own.
