peter mansell joins china's hanlong mining

THE former chairman of West Australian Newspaper Holdings has accepted an offer to head up the iron ore division of a Chinese company.

Peter Mansell has been appointed as the new chairman and head of iron ore business of Hanlong Mining, which has a range of mining interests in China and the US.

Hanlong also has a controlling 57 per cent shareholding in Perth resource company Moly Mines, which today announced the strong Australian dollar was hampering efforts to progress the Spinifex Ridge molybdenum project.

Hanlong is providing around $470 million of finance for Moly??s project, however it is unlikely the loan will be ready for drawdown by the end of this month, as required under an agreement.

Mr Mansell, who has practised as a commercial lawyer for more than 35 years, has also held board positions at Western Power and OZ Minerals.

He is also currently the chairman of Ampella Mining, director at Bunnings Warehouse Property Trust and international mining company Nyrstar NV.

A Hanlong spokesperson said Mr Mansell will be based in Perth. Hanlong's current Australia base is in Sydney but the spokesperson said since executives were constantly travelling to Perth, the company was considering opening up an office here.

Hanlong Group chairman Liu Han said the company was pleased to recruit Mr Mansell.
