Interesting observations Jarrod. Seems to me though that we cannot be trusted with a fiat currency system. Or maybe this is a failing of democracies in that they inevitably produce weak and incompetent leaders who run to the printing presses at the first sniff of unpopularity.
Whatever the reasons, the disciplines implied in gold backed currencies would probably overcome problems of unbridled credit expansion, and hobble the activities of leaders seeking to be loved by avoiding the issues of the day.
