Franco East: Petrobras reports pre-salt oil find

Petrobras has reported another oil discovery at an appraisal well of the Franco prospect in unlicensed pre-salt acreage in Brazil's Santos basin.



The state-led Brazil producer said the 3-RJS-723 well, informally known as Franco East, was drilled to a final depth of 5900 metres and came upon an oil column of 396 metres.

The discovery of oil of 28 degrees API was logged under the salt layer starting at a depth of 5398 metres.

Franco East, drilled by the cylindrical semisubmersible Sevan Brasil, is about 7.5 kilometres south-east of the original Franco discovery well and about 200 kilometres off the city of Rio de Janeiro.

"Oil samples were collected in reserves with similar thicknesses to those registered in the discovery well, confirming the extension of these reserves with oil in the east part of the Franco block," Petrobras said in a statement.

Petrobras has been ramping up drilling in unlicenced agreage where it has special rights to produce over 3 billion barrels of oil, with an exploratory phase running through September 2014.

The Brazil giant is also drilling the Franco Northeast appraisal well using the Diamond Offshore semi-submersible rig Ocean Valor, as well as a probe to assess a remote location in the Franco block with the Odebrecht-owned drillship ODN II.

Simultaneously, Petrobras is also drilling an appraisal well to the Iara Surround discovery made earlier this year.

The prospect was spud in August by the Schahin drillship Sertao in 2249 metres of water.
