ConocoPhillips restarts Browse drilling

CONOCOPHILLIPS and Karoon Gas have resumed their multi-well drilling campaign in Western Australia’s Browse Basin with the spudding of Kontiki-1.
Kontiki-1 is the second well in the Browse Basin campaign and was spudded with the Transocean Legend semi-submersible drilling rig on Wednesday.
The well will be drilled to a total depth of 4160m and is targeting potential resources of up to 5 trillion cubic feet of gas. The well is also about 29 kilometres northwest of the first well, Poseidon-1.
According to Karoon, Kontiki-1 will target a completely new structure, separate to the gas-bearing Poseidon structure, and has the potential to provide a discovery of equal size and magnitude to Poseidon-1.
Poseidon-1 was drilled by the Sedco-703 semi-submersible drilling rig and intersected three gross sand intervals of about 10m, 67m, and 139m.
Following the completion of Kontiki-1, the Transocean Legend will move to drill the Poseidon-2 appraisal well.
The joint venture also holds options for up to six additional wells.
ConocoPhillips is operator of the Browse Basin drilling program, which spans three permits: WA-314-P, WA-315-P and WA-398-P.
The company holds a 51% interest in WA-314-P and WA-315-P, and a 60% interest in WA-398-P.
Karoon holds the remaining stakes in the three permits.
