they are still cheaper than children...and no back chat, demands, loyalty no matter what...they are worth every cent
it really is a small price to pay....and there is usually a learning curve....accidents are unfortunate and can happen to anyone

my little maltese was playing with a new toy, giving it a torrid time, hit her head against the table leg...and $1500 dollars later, we had her eye fixed...
then a young friend of the family visited, enjoyed KFC, I gave the dog some...6 weeks later we were at the vets, the dog cannot tolerate the fat in the chicken....$160 bucks to sort that out...
so we are very, very careful with her diet, and new toys...
    she just turned 5....
I had considered the vet insurance...but I was told the eye operation would not have been covered...as it was self inflicted....cost around $30 pm....so I figure we are about even...saved $360 per annum x 5 years = $1800 vet insurance...versus $1660 costs.

I used to rescue animals, horses, cows, dogs and cats...and paid it all out of my own funds....whereas today, there are numerous rescue groups who will assist with funding...
I have no regrets, it was all worthwhile....I received far more benefits, there was never a question about the cost benefit ratio
    cheers
