However, he was nominated for an academy award for is portrayal of Gust Avrakotos in 'Charlie Wilsons War' as I said above.
If he wasn't so good maybe no one would have noticed.
IMO Without Avrakotos the Soviet empire would not have fallen at least then - it was he who approached Wilson - against normal protocol.
That is one place where the movie differed from history.
I think people and the people who portrayed one of the biggest moves in human history - come pretty close to be called great.
Let's face facts - not many people know this story now - and yet these characters were the two people who engineered the first time in history the soviets had been defeated..
This changed the world.
Without Hoffman, hanks and the book before - we probably would still be blind to it.
How is it possible for such a big thing in history to happen under our noses and it take a book and a movie to bring it to the surface.
