I guess this is where research and understanding the technology and the markets that potential customers are involved in then you can understand as you said "future income they may generate"

When discussing patents that are an intangible asset for the company

Valuing that asset requires more than good punctuation and creative writing skills about your Uncle Wayne or whatever other wordplay you may use to amuse yourself.
