In my opinion the philosophy of physics and physics still make essential bedfellows.

Einstein, for example, began the process that lead to the Theory of Relativity by thinking about the nature of time, space and energy before formulating the ideas into forms that could be tested. I would say that the Theory of Relativity began life as a philosophy before it became a science.

I suggest that many physics theories went through a similar process.

There are several areas in physics where the navel gazing of philosophy may turn out to be useful and even essential to come up with testable hypotheses that become theories of physics for those that pass the tests. These include things like the start of the universe (if it started), the nature of gravity, time and space, quantum physics etc.
