Don't think stock split has anything to do with deal.
If deal was done then management would announce the deal and propose the stock split both at sametime. 50% share and 50% cash never required a stock split, the fraction of shares can be handled through cash adjustment (Like ETO Adjustment happens in ASX).
None of us thought or guessed that the stock split coming or will be a pre-requisite to sucessfull deal.
