A lot of the earlier models were designed without consideration for replacing the batteries. I know a guy who just bought a second hand 10 year old one for 10k and is getting new batteries put in for 10k. The other thing is battery tech is improving. Toyota has new tech coming into production that will make 10 minute fast charges/over 1200km ranges possible.

Recycling of batteries and figuring out how to do that will also bring costs down.
