China phosphate tax
THE other big news of the week came in so far unofficial reports that China is going to expand its peak-season export tax on phosphate, a move aimed at forcing Chinese fertiliser producers to sell more domestically. The plan is for China to further insulate itself from rising global fertiliser prices.
This must be good news for phosphate (and potash) explorers.
Minbos Resources (MNB) has completed 78 drill holes at its Angola phosphate projects with the cores now being analysed in Johannesburg while, at the other end of Africa, Celamin Holdings (CNL) has begun field work at its Bir El Afou phosphate project in Tunisia. But disappointing news for Mantle Mining Corp (MNM), which drilled 10 holes at its Barkly phosphate project in the Northern Territory with no significant intervals of said mineral. Next year it will drill near historic holes where higher-grade phosphate was found.
