Physical Biopsy Failures – Cross Contamination of Sample –Is there an alternative?
Part of a healthy lung removed – Coroner Inquest informed
Some of you may have read about a distressing coronial inquest currently in South Australia.
In sum, an Adelaide cardiothoracic surgeon removed part of a man’s lung based upon a biopsy sample that had been incorrectly analysed by a pathology laboratory as being cancerous. The patient’s biopsy sample became cross-contaminated which resulted in the serious error.
It is not known if the Coroner will be informed during the inquest about the alternative technology that can overcome such serious errors in the future.
Unfortunately, the patient died from pneumonia following the operation. The coroner will determine if the operation led to the pneumonia that resulted in the patient’s death.
Clearly, if the now deceased patient had a digital biopsy this would not have happened. In addition, the digital images would be preserved for ever unlike tissue from a physical biopsy.
Is there an alternative?
