The free kick count is irrelevant in that it is just a number.
Being at the match gives a completely different perspective of the match compared to the tv coverage. I think from all of the HC posters on this thread I was the only one actually at the match. We had great seats on the half forward flank so I had a perfect view.
The Giants tactic was to crash in at every opportunity and don’t worry about giving free kicks away especially in the back half and middle of the ground. The Giants wanted to disrupt Collingwood’s flow and it worked for three quarters. So the free kick count in Collingwood’s favour is a reflection of the Giant’s tactics rather than any umpire bias.
As I said above congratulations to GES on a club defining win. Leon Cameron coached well and used his diminished assets to great effect. The move of Zac Williams into the mid field worked extremely well.
