Something I didn’t mention earlier was that the train I travelled on during my trip was a RIO train. Of course I grilled my relative on whether they new of any possible counter offer for FMS. As I suspected they didn’t know anything and actually said that sort of information wouldn’t usually filter down the ranks. However they did say that nothing was too big for the company and that the amount of money I was talking about wouldn’t faze them, he said “if they wanted it they would just do it”.
Seeing the amount of work that was happening and the infrastructure being built in such a remote area of Australia made me realise how the business landscape of today’s Australia is vastly different to that of the last decade, some companies at the moment are just swimming in cash and money is really no objective when making decisions about their future while others are struggling to stay afloat, putting off staff left right and centre and counting every penny before making decisions.
The Bolle safety glasses that I managed to score as a souvenir from my train trip left me with no doubt which one my relative worked for!
