CGG repeats are regions in the DNA that have multiple copies of ...CGGCGGCGG… These come about because the DNA polymerase (the protein that replicates DNA) slip replicating these repeat regions getting longer (or shorter) over time.
I happen to know about Fragile X as one of my fellow students was working on Fragile X when I was doing my honours research (way back in 1993). It is causes mental retardation in boys and has the unusual feature that each generation in a family gets progressively more retarded as the repeat get longer. It is called Fragile X because the X chromosome tends to break when making Karyotypes (pictures of chromosomes in the cell).
