Murray said that while some of the genetic signal associated with obesity is localised in non-coding intronic segments in FTO, it's not entirely clear if the gene is causally linked. Early functional research supported a relationship between FTO and body mass, but more recent work suggested that the function of this genetic signal may instead relate to nearby genes IRX3 and IRX5. However, this impressive new study reaffirms the association with FTO. While this may have significance for inhibitors of FTO protein, the physiology is complex.
