I presume this stuff is still pretty much outside mainstream science - apart from anything else there's no money to be made in recommending fasting, fruits and vegetables. Nevetheless, if it works (as it appears to do), then it's ipso facto scientifically valid, and it's the job of research to examine, verify, and elucidate mechanisms.
I can't imagine it would be especially hard for theses ideas to be tested along the way during FTO trials.
