It's an interesting thought. I kind of like the idea of it's either me or its cancer - battling it out towards the end. What you are talking about is starving the cancer cell of glucose and switching your body over to a fasted, ketogenic state (where your body and brain runs directly on ketones instead of glucose). This has some merit, as
cancer cells typically use
glucose to create
energy to function. Abstaining from food for long periods of time will deplete your fat stores, yes, but it will also deplete your muscle stores, causing you to become malnourished. It is because of this that modern health professionals do not recommend this approach, as malnutrition has been strongly associated with poorer outcomes for cancer patients (1) as well as many other diseases.
If we bring this back to Bisantrene and RAC, a recent City of Hope paper released in 2021 demonstrated that low dose Bisantrene dramatically reduced AML cell lines ability to create energy from glucose (2). The paper states that this is due to FTO inhibition modifying downstream genes that control the utilization pathways of glucose.
Simply put, evidence has shown that pharmacological inhibition of FTO influences gene expression that controls things like the cell cycle, apoptosis, immune evasion, and cancer therapy resistance and sensitivity, which influences cancer cell growth, proliferation, migration, metastasis, immune response, and cancer drug efficacy. On top of this, evidence is supporting the consensus that pharmacological inhibition of FTO also prevents the cancer cell from utilizing glucose, which negates its ability to create energy - similar to the condition of undergoing long periods of fasting. There are other presumed benefits of fasting like autophagy and apoptosis induction, but this has already been proven with pharmacological inhibition of FTO in many papers. The benefit of this is that a patient can maintain a nourished state, whilst also theoretically starving the cancer cell of the metabolites required to generate energy.
