For pilots, all Qantas pilots begin as Second Officers and proceed to First Officer then Captain, although with the lack of career progression in Qantas right now some end their career as First Officers.
Qantas Second Officer start at around $80k and increase to a max $140k, first officer 120k-180k, captain starts at 180k and rises to 350k to extremely senior pilots.
In Virgin, pilots start off as a First Officer- as of 2011 the base salary is $104000 increasing to $123714, a captain on the 737 gets about $200k. Keep in mind that the time to promotion to Captain in Virgin is around 3-6 years, while in Qantas, the road from second officer to captain can be 15-20 years now, therefore the high salaries (over 250k) that newspapers quote and QF feed to the media are probably commanded by only a handful of senior management pilots.
