You say Qantas can`t compete purely because their wages and conditions are too high? I think you`ll find wages are around 4% of the operating costs of an airline. Granted, the operating margins are very thin for airlines but we are taking fractions of a % in the overall scheme of things. Take it from me ( I work in the industry but not at Qantas) there are much bigger issues causing Qantas to slide inexorably down than the issue of pilot wages. Some are beyond Managements control but as those in the know will attest, Qantas has made some very poor decisions in the last decade and when the current issues are fixed ( Pilots, Engineers etc.)the slide will continue.
