It is a widely known secret that Whites entity River Energy South Africa conducted an extensive DFS for upgrading waste coal including logistics handling tests on behalf of BHP Energy Coal South Africa (Becsa) . The study has been partially observed by Eskom representatives, too. According to the latest quarterly report discussions about a 0.5 mtpa project are well advanced. They expect further progress in the current quarter. I doubt that BHP executives will make any descisions about a BCB project during the demerger phase for their assets in SA. On the other hand it would be a very smart move to dress up Becsas stranded coal assets and tailing dumps with a BCB JV agreement before demerging them into Newco.
