If you consider gravity as part of the energy equation - it may work in some parts of the country. I live in FNQ and water pipes coming down from Tinaroo dam or Copperlode dam on the tablelands will have enough gravity fed water sending it down to Cairns to enable quite a few generators to work.
It probably would not work if the pipes carrying the water travelled along the tablelands with little or no gravity involved
