Engineering related companies are really tough holds because it takes a long while for the product to be validated. To get a flavour of the management (strengths, vision etc), I have always found meeting them helpful. I try to meet them at every available opportunity in addition to AGMs and EGMs. This way you will get a better feel of their strategy, their plans etc, and not simply judging their performance by the share price .
An opportunity is presenting itself again in 2020 (https://www.siww.com.sg/). Entrance is free. At one setting, you will get to know the whole water landscape and companies, state of competition, size of market etc. @stockrock, a great chance to meet Illan Wilf and for me to take you out for chilli crab.
At SIWW2016, I met Eytan and Ronen, the founders of EMC for the first time. They were manning a non-descript booth at the Israeli pavilion. I got to understand how deep the knowledge and resolve of the Israeli people to resolve problems pertaining to all things water related. They also explained what was MBR, MBBR and why MABR was the new frontier.
At SIWW2018, I met a different company altogether. They demonstrated they were out of box thinkers by pitching Aspiral to road facilities people. Later, I found out from the announcements the company was iTest. I have shared extensive notes before of these meetings. I also learnt that SUBRE is the holy grail. The retrofit market is much bigger than the municipal market. SUBRE and the retrofit market will last beyond the 13FYP.
What will I find out from SIWW2020? I hope to be pleasantly surprised. For one, I expect to be told that they have 300 to 500 new installations in China and around the world, closer to even a 1,000 or more. I also hope to hear plans that they have models that have miniaturized SPS and made desalination and WWTP more ubiquitous especially when we are coming to the tail end of the 13FYP. I hope to ask whether SUBRE has breeched the river reintermediation market.
Milestones are definitely more important to me for now.
