"Buru's Kimberley FLNG project a feasible option for Rafael field development
    April 18, 2023 Rick Wilkinson
Buru Energy Ltd., Perth, confirmed its floating LNG vessel offshore the Kimberly region of northwest Western Australia is a technically, commercially, and economically feasible option to commercialize the Rafael gas and condensate discovery.
Buru Energy Ltd., Perth, confirmed its floating LNG vessel offshore the Kimberly region of northwest Western Australia is a technically, commercially, and economically feasible option to commercialize the Rafael gas and condensate discovery.
Buru noted the development upon releasing results of its pre-feasibility study that began in November 2022 in partnership with Transborders Energy and Technip Energies.
The Rafael discovery lies in the onshore Canning basin southeast of Broome and Derby. Independently assessed potential 3C recoverable resource are estimated at 1 tcf of gas and 20 million barrels of condensate.
The pre-feasibility study confirmed that a compact, regionally sited FLNG vessel with a capacity of producing 1.6 million tonnes/year of LNG would be an economic development option when established in conjunction with onshore condensate and LPG processing.
The study found that the plan provides a relatively lower cost and shorter timeframe to development than alternative gas export options.
The concept involves stationing a permanently moored FLNG vessel in shallow water connected to an offshore/onshore pipeline to a small footprint onshore condensate stabilization, LPG separation, and gas conditioning plant. This in turn would be connected by onshore pipeline to Rafael field.
Field development would require a limited number of conventional wells and interconnected flowlines. Low CO2 content (less than 2%) means minimal gas conditioning.
Buru continues to work with Transborders and its partners including Kyushu Energy Electric Power, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Technip, SBM Offshore, and Add Energy to progress commercial discussions and refine cost and schedule parameters to define the next phase of the project.
In addition, the operator is looking at early commercialization options for the field, including local LNG production for Kimberly markets, as well as local value-adding gas conversion products such as methanol, ammonia, and urea. Gas export via the existing Northwest Shelf infrastructure is also being considered.
The studies are being conducted in parallel with appraisal work planning with an eye to quickly transition from appraisal drilling to a front-end engineering and design stage, reducing time to first produced sales.
A drilling program is scheduled for 2024.
Buru is currently mapping reprocessed 2D seismic data for insights into potential resource volumes and is preparing for a new 3D survey to begin early in second-half 2023. Data from the 3D work will guide the appraisal drilling program."

If 3D-Survey is to begin early in second-half 2023, confirmation of contract should be announced any day now. (IMHO)
