Even by the extremely unlikely event that he didn't intend to kill his girlfriend, he should still be locked up for life, or executed. He still killed her, and who is dumb enough to fire a shotgun through a door in a home in which your partner resides when you don't know who is on the other side?
Plain as day that this is 1st degree murder though.
