generic drugs

How does it work . The major drug companies have drugs that are about to come out of patent or are already. Take panadeine forte, the prescription pain killer that we take for arthritis, after surgery etc. I presume that this is out of patent as there is a generic available. The original drug company developer would prefer to extend the patent period; when they can't, they try to change the drug slightly and go for a new patent and charge 200% more for a product that may only be 5% better. They then try to get it on the PBS drug list; they are presently rejected because 5% improvement for 200% price increase is deemed 'uneconomical'. This obviously upsets drug companies because they want more money from old drugs to develop the new drugs. That is the dilemma in a simple form. In between are the generic drug manufacturers who are supplying cheaper existing drugs to the masses. My 'forte' I see is made in uk by Dakota Pharmaceuticals and were recommended by the chemist.
