Maybe that says something about "altruistic well meaning people" - what I generally call the rose coloured glasses brigade, in the end it's the so-called deniers and skeptics that have a better measure of what's really going on than those that dive in head first thinking it's just an easy fix to change humanity from being capitalistic to altruistic.
The vast majority of humans just want to better themselves, the extent that we go to in order to achieve that totally ignores what's best in the long run, we are a "must have it now society" and no threat to our existence will change that, even if it means extinction!
