Jan. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Platinum and gold jumped to records as AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. and Gold Fields Ltd. halted South African production because of a power shortage. Oil and copper gained for a second day.
AngloGold, Africa's largest gold producer, stopped production at all its mines in South Africa from this morning because of a power shortage. Gold Fields halted output late yesterday. Anglo Platinum Ltd., the world's biggest producer of the metal, also stopped output after a request from state-owned utility Eskom Holdings Ltd. to reduce electricity consumption.
``Precious metal prices rose massively after news came out that in South Africa all gold mines and most platinum mining operations were suspended,'' Wolfgang Wrzesniok-Rossbach, head of marketing and sales for Heraeus in Hanau, Germany, wrote in an e-mail today.
