Why couldn't ESG develop it's own assets and become a large producer ? After all , that was QGC's intention until the combination of the GFC and a reasonable offer from BG. Chris Sadler might be very handy in this area. Alas ,I believe the only thing that will stop ESG doing it's own thing is the market itself i.e. a takeover.
I still don't think STO has the clout to takeover ESG but if that is the case , why wouldn't they attempt some kind of 50/50 joint venture/partnership now ? They may not get the lot but they won't miss out either. They can also merge ( read takeover ) ESG later once pel 238 is developed . This is a strategy the supermajors appear to use successfully.
As far as gas demand goes , I just look around the world and see what big oil is up to. There is plenty of info out there. The likes of Exxon, Shell etc making major aquisitions into shale gas in the USA and Europe , the Qatar gas projects , massive pipeline upgrades from Russia to Europe , new gas discoveries i.e the recent find in the Gulf of Mexico by McMoRan is evidence enough for me. If the world ( particularly the USA ) isn't switching from oil to gas , I'II eat my hat !
By the way Yaq , my sentiment on ESG is exactly the same as yours.
