Unfortunately for your reasoning moondoong the proposed carbon tax will have no effect on either this years nor next years budget as they will not collect anything from it for about two years. The only way to get next years budget into surplus is a horror budget with massive spending cuts this year which I think they will make since it is over two years till the next election so they have nothing to fear.
