If as you postulate, GV n co were working "...very hard until the very end", then I am very, very certain they (especially he) would have told us all about it!
GV as a blimp in, (or a blight on), one's investing lifeline could be likened to a Very light, brighter than a Vesey light, and far less illuminating.
And since we are on the subject of hard working to the very end LNG management, your comment about something being on the nose Andy bee sums it up beautifully.
