My understanding is that the UK BHP/RIO shares are separate. Meaning, they are for the UK operations. The US ADRs are not separate. They represent a multiple or ratio of the Aus shares for the Aus operations traded on the nyse. (But Im not sure on Rio(RTP)? I think RTP.nyse represents the SA operation). Therefore, adrs directly effect the sp here or in SA. But the UK shares dont. - Hope that vaguely explains it.
