Having dug the Yallourn open cut, it was discovered the coal was 63% moisture (minimum) compared to the 38-48% German coals the Boiler technology was based on. There was (surprisingly) a problem in getting the coals to burn. In an early example of parallel engineering, the locals invent moving grate boilers and install them at Yallourn as the boilers are assembled.
