I also find it hard to understand why anyone would lend out a stock to be shorted, knowing that it will almost certainly be returned in a devalued state, despite whatever lending fee is charged. It only makes sense to me if the lender is the custodial holder of the shares, not the beneficial owner, and they are then getting a fee to lend out someone else's share.
