I like to use GMMA as an indication of trend for a stock. I categorise a GMMA chart into one of four states :
GREEN (all short term averages above & clear of all long term averages)
RED (all short term averages below and clear of all long term averages)
ORANGE (some short term averages are overlapping with long term averages, but have not broken through each other)
PINK (some short term averages are overlapping with long term averages, and some have broken through each other).
I use these four colours to shade the chart and the GMMA lines accordingly so as to give a visual representation, but as is often the case with GMMA, the chart can become somewhat cluttered and difficult to read especially if other indicators are present. I therefore condense these lines and colours into a ribbon, which imparts the same information, but in a much more succinct manner.
The chart below (of CBA) shows how it looks in practice. I do not trade using these lines exclusively, but I do include the GMMA colour as a component in my analysis.
