if shorters wanted to get out before the result they would be buyers ie buy stock they have sold which is highly unlikely.
My read is that someone put in a bet on the share price going up about 2pm and then shorters sold stock just before the close which would account for the big red bar.
in any case a 2.8% rise on average volume doesn't really tell us anything about what the result will be tomorrow. Just that there a few opportunists out there who are willing to have a bit of punt on what that might be.
Probably better to react rather than predict.
