I have been trying to understand what you mean, but I can't.
"If shorters opened their shorts this week" to me means if shorters did short-selling this week. And if that is what happened, then it is illogical "that would be up 80% on their positions on a rough estimate."
You don't seem to understand the meaning of opening a short position.
This is from FXopen website:
"Opening a short position or going short means selling an asset."
