If there is a gap, no trading occurred in that price range so some shareholders are suddenly in a profit and others in a loss, so there may be a tendency for profit taking and holding for losses to reduce, both of which might close the gap by causing trading to occur in the range before the gap appeared. that's my understanding but others may have better explanations of the concept.
