I don't really know what happened in 1987, but I/many of us did suffer all the way through the market collapse of 2007-2009. and it was brutal!
Came close to lose nearly everything, and it was really hard work to come back.
But somewhat miraculously I did manage.
Learnt my lesson and made sure I stay comfortable if there is another possible downturn.
Because of this past experience I have sold some of my holdings way too early.
Of course I regret it now, but it gave me a great comfort at the time (and still does), to be sitting on a pile of cash, and a collapse of a sort can't hurt me big time any more.
Better to be careful, than sorry.
