Now in the context of currency, if you look at the 30 year Aussie peso v USD, the peso has been wiped out many times and the illusionary accumulated profit has disappeared and likewise for the holders of USD.



The shares I purchased at $5.40 in the CBA float of 1991, 600 shares for $3240, are now valued at $69000. The last dividends yielded $4.50 plus franking credits. Is that illusionary profit? Should I have cashed in when the SP doubled and banked the profit in cash? Was I wiped out in the GFC when CBA plunged to $25?

Everything moves up and down like a roller coaster, some don’t recover, like LKE for instance. It probably won’t ever produce Lithium as it needs $33k LCE price to make the project a goer.

Your perspective is that of a trader who makes profit by buying and selling. Saying some people never learn because they are prepared to ride a roller coaster on a company and sector that ticks boxes for their investment thesis is not something I agree with.

I don’t have the skills to time the market. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. What I’ve learnt is that I have maximized my gains as best I can with my skill level. If I had tried to time when to get on and off the roller coaster, I would still be a shift worker trying to get a retirement fund together. Instead, I started a SMSF, backed my investment strategy and stuck it out over 30 years. It worked for me. My glove might not fit everyone and nor should it.
